Working Principle

The wet scrubber system operates by directing the polluted exhaust gas stream into contact with a scrubbing liquid. In packed tower designs, gas flows upward through a column filled with packing media while liquid flows downward, creating a large contact surface for gas-liquid interaction. Soluble gases and fine particles are absorbed into the liquid. In venturi scrubbers, the gas passes through a constriction where high-velocity gas atomizes the scrubbing liquid into fine droplets, which capture particles through inertial impaction. The scrubbed gas passes through a mist eliminator to remove entrained liquid droplets before discharge. The spent scrubbing liquid is collected, treated, and recirculated. Chemical reagents may be added to the scrubbing liquid to neutralize specific acid gases or enhance removal efficiency.

The recirculating system minimizes water consumption. Makeup water is needed only to replace evaporation and blowdown losses, typically 2-5% of the circulation rate.
